John 3  •  12/9 & 13/14

The 3rd chapter of John contains two accounts, one of Nicodemus’a coming to talk with Jesus and the second a return to John the Baptist and his followers.

John 3.1-21 - Tuesday, 12/2, Jim covered the encounter with Nicodemus. Jesus told Nicodemus that one must be born again, born of the Spirit. Nicodemus could not understand what Jesus was saying. Nicodemus heard and understood through earthly, human ears. Jesus was talking of spiritual matters. It should be no surprise that Nicodemus couldn’t grasp what Jesus was saying.

In 1 Corinthians 2.12-15, Paul wrote:

"Now we have not received the spirit of the world, but the Spirit who is from God, so that we may know the things that are freely given to us by God. And we speak about these things, not with words taught us by human wisdom, but with those taught by the Spirit, explaining spiritual things to spiritual people. The unbeliever does not receive the things of the Spirit of God, for they are foolishness to him. And he cannot understand them, because they are spiritually discerned. The one who is spiritual discerns all things, yet he himself is understood by no one.”

John 3.22-36 - John the Baptist once again confirms that Jesus, not he, is the one to come - the Son of God. The Baptiser, clearly says that he must decrease and Jesus must increase. He also reiterates a theme of John’s gospel that,  “he who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides in him."

December 16th we will watch a very good movie “The Nativity Story.” There will be no sessions December 23rd and 30th.

Merry Christmas & Happy New Year!!
